Hakusan is one the ten most important shrines of Tokyo. It is said to have been built in the 8th century to pray for the remedy of smallpox. The shrine's hall of worship (built in 1277) is the most impressive of all. It has been designated as "Important Cultural Property" by the Metropolitan Government of Tokyo. Hakusan Shrine is also known for its many (over 3000) hydrangea bushes. A festival is held every June, when the hydrangea flowers are in full bloom.
