Built in the shape of a cross and designed after the local market in Marseilles, the Agora is the place where fresh local produce is being sold, literally a foodies' paradise. The Agora has been the main source point of herbs and spices, fruit and vegetables, even fresh fish since 1913 for both locals and visitors. Tip: For an authentic, traditional Cretan Greek food experience try one of the tavernas located inside the market, serving food from the early morning hours (ideal after a night out!) till dusk.

The Municipal Market of Chania, the huge building of 4.000 sq.m. on Hatzimichalis Giannaris, is one of the most important newer monuments of the city of Chania. It was built in 1913 on the bastion of Piatta Forma, in the middle of the Venetian walls. In essence, it was a serious intervention to modernize and unify the old and the new, rapidly growing out of the Venetian walls. The plan was the local engineer K. Drandakis, who followed the pattern of the Marseilles covered market. It has the shape of a cross and four doors, one in each wing. It houses 76 shops, arranged in groups on the four antennae of the cross. It is open from early morning and until 9 pm every day except Sundays !!

Its official inauguration was made by the then Prime Minister of Greece El. Venizelos on 4 December 1913, three days after the official ceremony of the Union of Crete with Greece. Impressive for its size and form is the Municipal Market of the city, built on the remains of the Piatta Forma bastion
