One other place I recommend for animals is just off the beaten path. Just across the bridge (first stop light), on the mainland is the McGough Nature Center (long walk or a very short drive). They have a lot of info about local animals including ones to visit (one of their stars actually pooped on Pres George Senior) and a beautiful eagle. The coolest part is the turtle pond (they have food you can buy for the turtles). It has a great variety. They also have paths to run/walk, a dock into the intercoastal to check out and a small playscape. The best part of McGough is it is free (though I request you make a donation to the Friends of McGough while you are there). Good for a couple hour change of pace (take a lunch and have a picnic while you are there if you like) and is usually not busy during the weekend.

Affectionately known as Turtle Park by locals it is a true hidden gem and must-see for kids and all nature enthusiasts, ponds with 100’s of turtles and food available to feed them, walking trails leading to intercoastal, new park with a kids’ zipline, grab a map from the office area and explore, visit the rescued birds and reptiles. Volunteers are very knowledgeable about animals, indoor exhibits available. Bring walking shoes, and sunscreen and enjoy this family activity. Very close to Proino Breakfast Restaurant
