You can access Masonboro Island at mid/high tides via kayak! A private island only accessible by boat - swim and surf, be a shell seeker, read your book sitting by the dunes... relax and be.
This is the paddle route to Masonboro Island. It’s about 15-30 min each way depending on wind, tides, and paddle strength. It’s an easy trip for most adults and children over 12 years old.
The Masonboro Island Reserve can only be reached by boat. There are public and private boat ramps in and near Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach and at the New Hanover County Trails End Park. There are also private fee ferry services to the reserve. Masonboro Island is the largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the North Carolina coast and is located approximately five miles southeast of Wilmington, in the most populous part of the North Carolina coast.

Only accessible by boat and situated just north of Carolina Beach, Mansonboro Island is the largest site within the North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve, and comprises of more than 5,600 acres of beautiful beaches, marshlands, tidal flats, and maritime forest. As a result of this natural setting, birdwatchers and nature fans will be in heaven strolling through along the 8.4 mile long shoreline, and will find abundant wildlife as well as flora and fauna around every scenic turn.
