I volunteer here restoring and maintaining Portland's active steam locomotives that were pulled from a park and restored to operation by this dedicated group of volunteers. Entry is free and they offer train rides on weekends in the summer months.
This working enginehouse houses the three steam locomotives owned by the city of Portland, including the Southern Pacific 4449 which pulled the American Freedom Train in 1976. I volunteer here. Open Thur-Sun, 1-5 pm. On Saturdays a local railroad operates an excursion train between the Oregon Rail Heritage Center and Oaks Amusement Park.
This place is great for children and anyone interested in trains. It's near the Willamette River, Aerial Tram that goes over the river, The Eastbank Esplanade Loop that goes along the river and Omsi science museum. There's a stop near for the fun streetcar and the MAX lightrail. orhf.org gobytram.com omsi.edu
Right near the Max line as well. The kids will be enthralled for hours with this sweet little hidden gem.
