The Caledonian Canal stretches from Fort William to Inverness. It was built by Thomas Telford. The lock gates cut through the centre of Fort Augustus providing a stunning backdrop for photographs.
An interesting museum about the construction of the canal system. Cafe on site and a good ice cream shop too. Please check the website and/or Facebook page for opening hours and other relevant details.
The Caledonian Canal Visitor centre has recently opened in the village. Its great for understanding the history of the canal – you can also grab a souvenir or enjoy homemade Scottish produce in the café – great for a quick lunch.
At Fort Augustus visitors can also enjoy a visit to the Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre which details the history of the canal. Sit and watch the boats navigating the locks or explore the Clansmen Centre, where appropriately attired guides demonstrate 17th century clan weaponry.
