If you want to take in some nature during your visit you can't do much better than the Jean Lafitte park and preserve. This national park is free and open to the public, and they offer several miles of easy walking trails through pristine swamp and marsh land. If you go during the right time of year you will probably see some alligators! You will need a car to get there, but there is parking available at the park.

You have to drive out there, but totally worth it to hike the short trails. You can walk down a boardwalk over the swamp, or walk along some ancient trails to see ancient alligators in the wild. You also may still be able to canoe out there, check with the ranger station on that. Totally worth it.
