Swimming, Picnicking and Hiking around pristine stream fed lake... or take a stroll up to the fire tower for a 360* panoramic view of the valley.
One of the oldest parks in the CT state park system. Recreational opportunities include hiking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, and picnicking.
Mt. Tom State park is a scenic 40 minute drive up into Litchfield county. It features a public sandy beach on a clear freshwater lake, great for swimming, and a nice grassy, shady picnic area. It's also one of our favorite spots for launching kayaks or paddle boards, since there are no power boats allowed. This means conditions are calm and perfect for paddling. This is a spring fed lake, so the water is very clear and clean. Many swimmers go outside the designated swim area to take a longer swim and train for triathlons. There are basic facilities. For hikers, there are some moderate woodsy and rocky uphill trails through the woods to an old stone tower and an overlook with views of the surrounding hills. This is a nice day hike destination with a view at the top. Wear sturdy footwear, as much of the trail is rocky. Summer & Fall weekends can be busy, so get there early, or try for a weekday or off season. While in the area, check out West Shore Seafood in Morris, CT for seasonal outdoor dining!
