Wer die rund einstündige Fahrt über kleine Bergstrassen nicht scheut (im April mit vielen Orch-ideen gesäumt!), erholt sich zuerst im urigen Kafenion von Zakros (es gibt auch andere Gasthäu-ser). Anschliessend geht es in das bekannte «Death Valley Gorge» – eine Schlucht, die bis zum Meer hinunterführt und das Ende der europäischen Wanderroute E4 markiert. Nicht dass diese Schlucht besonders gefährlich wäre, aber am Ende befinden sich die Reste einer Minoischen Siedlung mit entsprechendem Friedhof. Noch etwas weiter unten, am Meer, gibt es ein paar Ta-vernen und einen schönen Kiesstrand. Wer die Wanderung lieber abkürzen möchte, parkiert das Auto etwa auf halbem Weg, etwas oberhalb der Schlucht (offizieller Parkplatz). Dann verpasst du jedoch das mittlere Drittel, mit seinem spannenden Weg durch heimische Platanenwälder, mit diversen Bachquerungen. Im Sommer und frühen Herbst ist der Bach vermutlich ausgetrocknet.

The beautiful Gorge of Kato Zakros (or the gorge of the Dead) starts in a short distance from Ano Zakros, nearly 100km southeast of Agios Nikolaos church and ends at Kato Zakros beach. The beauty of the landscape, the historical importance of the gorge and its accessibility, attract many visitors every year. The trail in the gorge is part of the E4 European trail. It is an exceptionally beautiful gorge, with high walls with big caves on them. In those caves, tombs of the Minoan era, have been found, which contained findings of great archaeological value. Because of these tombs, the gorge is also called "Gorge of the Dead" and the caves "Caves of the Dead".

Zakros Gorge begins slightly beyond the village of Ano Zakros and ends at Kato Zakros beach. The path running through this gorge is the last segment of Europe's long distance E4 path.
