You start your visit first with the museum of the crypt of the Capuchins. Here you will learn more about the history of the Capuchins and the crypts. This museum includes a work by Caravaggio on which Saint Francis is painted. Then you will visit the crypt; this moderately lit crypt consists of five chapels, each of which is decorated with bones, skulls and sometimes even complete skeletons and one boneless chapel with the altar. You finish the tour in the last chapel with the special message ‘Quello che voi siete noi eravamo, quello che noi siamo voi sarete’ (translated “Exactly what you are now, we once were, what we are now will become you. Afterwards you can also visit the associated church 'Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini'.

The Janiculum is a Roman hill, overlooking the right bank of the Tiber, whose maximum height is 88 meters, not included in the group of seven traditional hills. The eastern slope slopes down towards the river and at the base is the historic district of Trastevere, while the western one, less steep, is the oldest part of the modern district of Monteverde; to the south-west of the hill is Villa Doria Pamphili, while on its eastern slopes are the botanical gardens of Rome and the Regina Coeli priso. Perfect place to look over and take pictures of all the churches and buildings of Rome below.

The Janiculum is a very pleasant area for walking, with its cheerful environment, away from the chaos of the city. Usually there are activities for children, such as puppet shows or pony rides. These are some of the most interesting places to visit in the area: Fontana dell'Acqua Paola: It is a monumental marble fountain, created in the 17th century to celebrate the reopening of the ancient Roman aqueduct. Faro Manfredi: The beautiful lighthouse built in 1911 was a gift from the Italians who emigrated to Argentina. Church of San Pietro in Montorio: Part of a Franciscan monastery, the church remained open to the public until today. In its courtyard is the Tempietto di Bramante, a small temple erected in the place where St. Peter was crucified. Garibaldi Monument: The bronze equestrian statue depicting Garibaldi is part of the park that commemorates the resistance on the Janiculum Hill against the French army in 1849.

If, per chance, you should one day be enjoying the splendid panorama from the Gianicolo’s belvedere and suddenly hear a loud canon shot, do not be alarmed … just check your watches because it will be midday! Since 1847, on the order’s of Pius IX, a special canon fires blanks at noon on the hour. The pope wanted to set a standard time for all the bells of the Church of Rome so that they would chime at the same time. Since 24th January 1904, the canon has been firing at the top of the Gianicolo from under the statue of Italian Patriot and Hero of Two Worlds Giuseppe Garibaldi and its shot, when the city is little less noisy, may even be heard as far as the Esquilino.
