The Central Market of Valencia is one of the largest in Europe, covers more than 8,000 square metres, with a predominantly Valencian Art Nouveau style. Its unusual roof comprises original domes and sloping sections at different heights, while the interior seems to be lined in a range of materials such as iron, wood, ceramics and polychromed tiles. The beauty of the building stands out especially on account of the light that enters through the roof at various points, and through coloured window panels. An excellent place to buy fresh local produce but there are also several souvenir shops and restaurants located inside the market as well.

One of the worlds great market halls. A must see. Try to go there in the morning or at least before 1 pm. Inside the Mercado is a small open food bar run by a Michelin starred chef, but nonetheless super affordable. If you go there at noon or 12.30 you might not even have to queue ;-)
Mercado Central in Valencia can be found in El Barrio del Carmen in the old town, opposite La Lonja and the Iglesia Santos Juanes (Church of St John). This is one of the oldest and largest indoor markets in Europe, built with ceramics and an ornate iron and glass covered dome which reaches up to 30 meters. Perched on top of the weather vane are a parrot and fish – the green parrot is the symbol of the market. Mercado Central opened in 1839 and underwent a major reconstruction between 1914 and 1928. It has recently undergone another major refurbishment and looks better than ever. The market covers exactly 8,160 square meters and is divided into two areas. The basement is now a car park.
