Penicuik House perfectly embodies the ideals of Palladian architecture in its simplicity and symmetry
Stop for some coffee and cake within a beautiful setting. The highly reviewed café also serves a range of soups, sandwiches and desserts using locally sourced produce within a very modest kitchen. The café sits within the grounds of Penicuik House, a former grand estate house with only the shell of the building now surviving. The 18th-century palladian mansion was built on the site of an earlier house by Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet. It was destroyed by a major fire in 1899 and a major restoration was completed in 2014 by G Brown Stonemasons. After dropping the car at the parking area, the café is a short walk through the beautiful grounds. Within such a breathtaking setting, it is one of the best kept secrets in the area.
