the old jewish bath, another place that needs a visit in Ortigia. this located past Tinkite' in via della giudecca. very close to the fountain/water distributor suggested for drinking water
In the basement of the Residence "Alla Giudecca" is located, at 18 meters of depth, the biggest and oldest Jewish ritual bath in Europe. guided tour possible everyday from 9:00 to 19:00.
The miqweh, located 18 meters below street level, in the basement of a patrician building that now houses a hotel, and fed by pure spring water, is among the only ritual baths in Europe that retain its integrity and charm to this day. Members of the Syracuse Jewish community used to dive into the waters of the miqweh to "erase their sins." The entrance leads directly to the tunnel carved into the rock that descends into a rectangular room at whose center there are three tubs in which water still flows (from the rich Syracuse aquifer that also gives life to the Source of Aretusa) . Inside there are also vestibules formed by arches carved into the rock and other tubs (one of which is made from an ancient Greek aqueduct) placed inside niches near the main room of the Miqweh.
