The Latomia dei Cappuccini is the largest of the Latomie of Syracuse, in the Sicilian language it is also called sibbia. It has been used since the 6th century BC. as a quarry to enrich the city with monuments and homes. Among the first testimonies of the place, Hippolytus of Rome in the Refutatio contra omnes haereses writes that for Xenophanes, ... in Syracuse, in the Latomie, footprints of fish and seals were found. After the victory of Syracuse over the Athenian troops, the captured soldiers were locked up and left to die inside the Latomie, including that of the Capuchins (413 BC).

amazing visit to the jail of the old greeks, this natural cave was used to extract the stone to build temples and the greek theatre and used as jail, the site is below an old monastery and Church

La latomia più bella della città. Un paesaggio sorprendente, fantastico, tra realtà di meditazione ed immaginazione storica. Gli accessi sono purtroppo limitati, è una visita preziosa, potrebbe sfuggirvi.

cit." Patrick Brydone"«Le latomie formano ora un elegante giardino sprofondato sotto la superficie del terreno e sono senza dubbio uno dei luoghi più belli e romantici che io abbia mai veduto. Si trovano per intero a circa cento piedi sottoterra, e sono incredibilmente vaste. Il giardino è tutto tagliato in una roccia dura come il marmo, composta di un conglomerato di conchiglie, ghiaia ed altro materiale marino. Il fondo dell'immensa cava, da cui fu probabilmente tratta la pietra per costruire quasi tutta Siracusa, è ora ricoperto da un terriccio fertilissimo, e siccome è un luogo assolutamente riparato dal vento, è pieno di ogni sorta di arboscelli e bellissimi alberi "

La Latomia dei Cappuccini e' la piu' grande tra le latomie di Siracusa,in lingua siciliana viene anche chiamata sibbia.
