The Latomia dei Cappuccini is the largest of the Latomie of Syracuse, in the Sicilian language it is also called sibbia. It has been used since the 6th century BC. as a quarry to enrich the city with monuments and homes. Among the first testimonies of the place, Hippolytus of Rome in the Refutatio contra omnes haereses writes that for Xenophanes, ... in Syracuse, in the Latomie, footprints of fish and seals were found.
After the victory of Syracuse over the Athenian troops, the captured soldiers were locked up and left to die inside the Latomie, including that of the Capuchins (413 BC).

The Ear of Dionysius (Italian: Orecchio di Dionisio) is a limestone cave carved out of the Temenites hill in the city of Syracuse, on the island of Sicily in Italy. Its name, given by the painter Michelangelo da Caravaggio, comes from its similarity in shape to the human ear. The name is also linked to echoes in the cave. The Ear of Dionysius was most likely formed out of an old limestone quarry. It is 23 metres high and extends 65 metres back into the cliff. Horizontally, it bends in an approximate "S" shape; vertically it is tapered at the top like a teardrop. Because of its shape, the Ear has extremely good acoustics, making even a small sound resonate throughout the cave.

The Grotta dei Cordari is another artificial cavity. It takes its name from the activity of artisanal rope makers, active since medieval times and up until the second half of the 20th century. It is said that the prisoners of the tyrant Dionysius I were locked up in this cave. The poet Philoxenus of Cythera, who contradicted the tyrant by criticizing his lack of poetic talent, was locked up several times in the Latomia of Paradise, where he composed his most famous work entitled Cyclops. However, there is a doubt as to whether it was the Ear of Dionysius or the Cave of the Cordari, since according to the testimonies of Claudius Aelianus, Philoxenus was locked up «in the most beautiful cave of the Latomie» and both of these caves, both for the cutting and due to the colors produced, they are of remarkable beauty
