”Erected in the early thirteenth century on the site of a Viking settlement, Dublin Castle served for centuries as the headquarters of English, and later British, administration in Ireland. In 1922, following Ireland’s independence, Dublin Castle was handed over to the new Irish government. It is now a major government complex and a key tourist attraction”. Dublin Castle is also in the heart of the city and worth a look.

Kilmainham Gaol was once a prison that has been reopened as a Museum. The tour is very informative and gives and insight into the Irish & British relationship and the struggle for Irish Independence. “The opening and closing of the Gaol more or less coincided with the making and breaking of the Union between Great Britain and Ireland. During the intervening years the Gaol functioned like a political seismograph, recording most of the significant tremors in the often turbulent relations between the two countries”
