About 45 minutes from our home - an awesome day trip! Hiking the gorge is our FAVORITE in the summer because - a NATURAL WATER SLIDE awaits you. So much fun! Arrive early to get a gorge permit - they only hand out 100 at a time. This hike we'd classify as difficult because of the terrain. There is no "trail" as you navigate large boulders along the rushing water. When you reach the natural rock water slide, get ready to "yeeehaw!!" your way down and plunge into the refreshing natural pool. So refreshing! We recommend waterproof casings for all things - it's SUPER SLIPPERY by the slide. Be cautious.

A hiker's outpost and STORE (the first hiker hostel stop on the Appalachian Trail). They have an awesome selection of unique local gifts, pottery and art. It's an adorable store and if you're in the market for some hiking shoes, these are the experts that can get you in the right pair. We always stop here for provisions on our way to hiking Blood Mountain. It's located right before the Blood Mountain trailhead.

Get a "taste" of history. A live working mill and granary running since 1876! Stock up stone ground biscuit and pancake mix (we do!), milled the old fashioned way and without preservatives, additives and all that nonsense. A fun stop for taking in some history, baking ingredients and down home recipes.

Entertainment & Activities

About 15-20 minutes from our home. Okay, it's 1969 and in a flash of civic genius this small mountain town decided to transform itself into a Bavarian village, architecture and all! Very popular with visitors, enjoy strolling along the fairytale-inspired streets, grabbing a brew, some chocolates and taking a tube ride down the river (not necessarily in that order) ;) Spend an hour or a full day - it's quick trip from our home and always popular with visiting families! The restaurants on the main strip offer the basics with a European veil but take a stroll down the alleys you'll find a German menu at the Bavarian Inn (and bar).
