Just outside of Slab City, this mountain of paint is made from adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint. Salvation Mountain was created by local resident Leonard Knight (1931–2014). It encompasses numerous murals and areas painted with Christian sayings and Bible verses, though its philosophy was built around the Sinner's Prayer. Pretty instagram famous these days...

This was destined to be the next Palm Springs and desert oasis. Thousands of palms were plants, streets were paved, streets were NAMED, and parcels were sold! Financing fell through when water couldn't be guaranteed, and now it's a snapshot of the promise that once was. Beautiful in an eerie way.
