Named after the folkloric Puerto Rican farmer, this family-run restaurant has been dishing up Puerto Rican-style comfort food just like an abuela would since the 1970s.

With its artisan ice pops, Señor Paleta has made a splash onto a scene already cluttered with fruit sorbet and snow-cone carts. Made fresh daily from locally sourced fruits, premium nuts, and chocolates, these aren’t your typical homemade popsicles. Flavors include tamarind, strawberry-mojito, dulce de leche, and the always excellent coconut — smooth, creamy, with chunks of real coconut in every bite. Be warned: There’s usually a line down the block despite the intense heat. Stop by early in the day to beat the crowds.

Just a few miles from San Juan, the Piñones coastline is dotted with endless kiosks and food stalls, all just a few feet away from pristine beaches. While there’s no shortage of traditional fritters, Kiosko El Boricua stands out from the rest with their made-to-order m.o.; no heat lamps here. There are no frills, but you’ll have plenty of time to think about your order as you wait in line for fritters like bacalaitos (flat cod fish), ground beef alcapurrias, pinchos (meat skewers), crab-stuffed pastelillos (fried turnovers), and piononos (ground beef wrapped in sweet plantain). While you can grab a seat in the shaded picnic table amongst the smoky air, we recommend crossing the street with your food and winding down at surf spot Aviones to watch the locals enjoy the most consistent waves in the city.
