The House of Refuge at Gilbert’s (Sand) Bar was built in 1875 and opened in March of 1876 as a haven for shipwreck survivors. The last of the ten original houses of refuge, it has survived storms and floods because it was built on an outcropping of Anastasia rock. The House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974 and has served a variety of needs throughout the years. It was a refuge for shipwreck survivors, a Life-Saving and Coast Guard station, a look-out post for submarines in WWII, a sea turtle refuge, and the museum it is now. The House of Refuge serves as a repository for historical artifacts and hosts thousands of visitors annually. It is also a unique venue for weddings and other celebrations and hosts a lecture series during the winter season. Visit the website: houseofrefugefl.org.
