The Saxon Shore Way is a long distance footpath that follows the coastline of Kent and East Sussex as it was about 1500 years ago. Walkers can join this route from the 1066 Walk. Before the North Kent Marshes or the Romney Marsh came into being, the cliff lines to the north and south extended into the sea and the Wantsum Channel provided a thoroughfare for boats between the Isle of Thanet and mainland England. The Saxon Shore Way takes its name from a line of fortifications built along the coastline at the end of the Roman period, 3rd century AD. The Romans built a line of defensive forts along the coast to repel the Saxon invaders coming from southern regions of modern Denmark. Places visited on the route from the beginning in Gravesend include Medway and the Hoo Peninsula, Rochester, Gillingham, Sittingbourne, Faversham, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Sandwich, Deal, Dover, Folkestone, Hamstreet, Appledore, Rye, Winchelsea and Fairlight Cove before the route ends in Hastings.

Literary Sussex

Rye: Lamb House was home to several Sussex authors - Henry James, E.F. Benson and Rumer Goden. James wrote numerous novels and short stories, including The Turn of the Screw, The Wings of the Dove and The Ambassadors. American by birth, James spent the last 53 years of his life in England, and loved Lamb House. He entertained other authors there, including H.G. Wells – whose mother was housekeeper at National Trust house, Uppark in South Harting. E.F. Benson, famous for his Rye-based books about social rivals Emmeline Lucia and Elizabeth Mapp, visited Henry James at Lamb House and subsequently leased the property a few years after James’ death in 1916. Later in the 20th century, Lamb House welcomed another author: the novelist, Rumer Godden. The house is administered by a tenant on behalf of the National Trust and open to the public between March and October on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons.
