Dynamic New Mexico Nature
Not far out of town and totally remarkable landscape near the Rio Grande. Maybe 20-25 miles, but takes about 45 minutes as there is an 8-10 mile unpaved washboard road. Totally worth the trip as it is spectacular and unusual. You can walk through the canyon and see some of the many folks who do mountain climbing on the spectacular rock formations, about 3 mile hike to the Rio Grande. Take lots of water.

Oh my gosh, just getting to Cimarron you go through some of the most amazing country in Northern New Mexico. A loop from Santa Fe to Angel Fire, then Eagles Nest, then through Cimarron Canyon to Cimarron. Don't fly through town or you will miss the absolutely amazing wild west St. James Hotel, replete with saloon, haunted rooms from the many wild west people who fought it out. You can book a haunted room if that is something you want to do. The St. James Hotel has a great restaurant as well. From here it is a short drive to I-25, then about an hour back to Santa Fe. Just the best day ever trip. Lots of hiking trails and rivers. Majestic mountains, incredible gorges, maybe you will see some of the abundant wildlife as well, especially around Eagles Nest Lake. I love all of it.
