Carlsmith Beach Park
1815 Kalanianaole StThis is a one of my favorite places to swim.
Beautiful black sand beach where you can swim. It is a clothing optional beach and a bit busy as it is one of the only beaches on the Puna side where you can swim. I recommend early morning if you want less people. Sunrise is lovely.

There are many amazing hikes at the Volcanoe National Park. Getting a glimpse of the active volcanoe is remarkable.

Be aware of fire ants.
We have fire ants in this area so its good to be aware of where you are putting your things when you are at parks or beach areas. Always shake your towels well and keep your clothes you take off in a bag, not just on the ground or on rocks. Fire ants are hard to see and you do not want to put on clothes or use a towel with them on it. You will be very unhappy. They bit and leave a nasty fire like sting and then it gets itchy. If you do get bit by a fire ant spraying white vinegar is helpful. Also do not put flowers in your hair before checking them for the tiny ants.
