Sightseeing
Flattop Mountain/Glen Alps trailhead is just a 15 minute drive. It offers a panoramic view of Anchorage and its surrounding mountains. There is a spectacular view within an easy walking distance from the parking lot, and a hike up to the top of the mountain for the more adventurous.

Crow Creek Historic Gold Mine is about a 45 minute drive near Girdwood. I like historic places, but my favorite thing about this place is that the grounds are absolutely gorgeous. One can pan for gold in Crow Creek, or opt to just take a walking tour.

A day trip to Girdwood takes only about 40 minutes. One can explore the shady trails around Alyeska Resort, relax in the beautiful Nordic Spa, and/or take the tram or hike to the top of the mountain and eat lunch at the Mountaintop Cafe as you look out over the valley below. The more adventurous may want to book a trip across the newly constructed skybridge.

Kincaid Park is a 22 minute drive and offers a nice paved coastal trail. It is common to see moose on trail at some point. They're majestic, but make sure to keep your distance.

On the way to attractions near Girdwood, you may want to stop at Beluga Point which is about 15 minutes from South Anchorage Haven. At high tide you may catch a glimpse of beluga whales in the Turnagain Arm (bay). On the opposite side of the road, look up and you may spot a mountain goats or Dall Sheep climbing on the cliffs.

It is fun to combine a visit to the Eagle River Nature Center with the hike to Thunderbird Falls since they are in the same vicinity. It is just 40 minutes from the South Anchorage Haven. It is an easy walk to the viewing decks, and what a gorgeous view it is!

Bring layers and hiking boots
The weather can be gorgeous and sunny, or cool and rainy in the spring, summer and fall: bring rain gear. In the winter, snow pants, boots and a warm coat are necessary.

Seeing wildlife in Alaska can be exciting. You may see moose, bear, whales, mountain goats, sheep and bald eagles all in one day. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings and give animals plenty of space. It is a good idea to carry bear spray when on hikes as well.
