Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis
IoanninonThe Roman Aqueduct of ancient Nikopolis
It was built in the 1st century. A.D. in the heart of the Roman city and indeed very close to the point where its two most central streets crossed. However, we do not know the exact chronology. Some archaeologists place it at the time when Octavian was still emperor (27 BC-14 AD), while others later, in the years of Nero (54-68 AD). In the second case, that is, it is connected with Nero's visit to Nicopolis in 66 AD. The conservatory had a capacity of about 1,000 people and was intended for musical events, recitals by poets accompanied by musical instruments, speeches and debates by orators. However, it is possible that it was also used as a parliament building, i.e. as a meeting place, as can be seen from its location next to the city market.
The architectural parts of the conservatory are the same as those of a Roman theater. It consists, in other words, of the stage, the orchestra and the hollow (fig. 4, no. 1-3). In fact, when it was built, its tent was united with the cave. Thus, the conservatory had the form of a closed perimeter building. However, because the scene is not preserved intact, the image that the building presents today is different (fig. 2). Some scholars believe that the conservatory may have been housed in its entirety or in some of its parts, a hypothesis that has also been formulated for other Roman conservatories. However, research on this matter continues.Like most Roman theaters and conservatories, it is built on level ground and not on the side of a hill. Therefore, in order for the hollow to have the necessary slope, it rested on a base of walls that were joined together with arches forming streets and arcades
