City/town information
The downtown is bustling with antiques, art & collectibles shops, dining for all tastes, a theater and other interesting stores. Landmarks in Clarkesville include Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church and the De Soto monument across from the Courthouse, which describes how De Soto passed through Habersham County on his travels. Moccasin Creek State Park is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the shores of Lake Burton and offers camping, boating, fishing and hiking. Step back in time at the Old Mauldin House, an in-town farmstead. Along Scenic 197, a beautiful and scenic driving route from Clarkesville to Lake Burton, must stops are Mark of the Potter, Burton Emporium and Gallery, the Cottage Garden, and LaPrade's Marina. The Soque River is outstanding for fly-fishing.

Clayton is a quaint Blue-Ridge-Mountains community just two hours north of Atlanta. On the Eastern Continental Divide, the town is the gateway to Black Rock Mountain State Park — the highest state park in Georgia. With wildflowers, fishing, waterfalls and 80-mile views, it’s a must-visit.
Go back in time at Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center, where 20 historical log structures make up an Appalachian Village outdoor museum. Or enjoy a thrilling trip down the Wild & Scenic Chattooga River aboard a white-water raft. The Southern Highroads Trail, a 364-mile-long loop of scenic and historic highways, runs through Clayton.
Kiddos will love a stop by Goats On The Roof — a tourist destination made popular throughout the years (and most recently on TikTok) where you can feed the “kids” that hang out on the roof.
This “Farm-to-Table Capital” of Georgia offers up award-winning chefs cooking dishes with buttery biscuits and tender, fresh-from-the-farm, local meats and vegetables. But the eateries aren’t the only award winners. A weekend in the mountains isn’t complete without a glass (or two) of vino from Tiger Mountain Vineyards or Stonewall Creek Vineyards.

Immerse yourself in the Bavarian village of Northeast Georgia! It's more than a bustling, artistic shopping district; the smells and sights will delight your senses.
Feast on delicious German delicacies and float the beautiful Chattahoochee River, which flows gently through Helen, a re-creation of a Bavarian Alpine village, complete with cobblestone streets. Local history is linked to the Cherokee Indians and early settlers who came to mine for gold and work in the lumber industry. Helen now has more than 200 specialty and import shops offering everything from candle making and glass blowing to cuckoo clocks and quilts. Dining options range from traditional German fare to traditional Southern.
A favorite getaway is Unicoi State Park with trails for hiking and biking as well as swimming and boating on Unicoi Lake. Stop for a wine tasting at Habersham Winery or for some "Georgia Ice-Cream," otherwise known as grits, at Nora Mill Granary.
Recreation is in abundance with fly-fishing, golfing, horseback riding, tubing and paddling. Attractions include Charlemagne's Kingdom, the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway and waterfalls.
Celebrate Oktoberfest in Helen every fall with a parade, live music, dancing, German-style food and drink, and a festive atmosphere that will make you think you've traveled all the way to Germany! Check the calendar of events for more festivals and fun throughout the year in Helen.
