Hiking up Benson from the parking lot by Witchcraft lake. Awesome hike and totally rewarding view at the top. (360d.) The whiskey jacks are really cool, as they are tame enough to land on your hand (or your head!).

Pipers Lagoon and Park has both an exposed beach and a more sheltered beach. Even on the exposed beach side of the path there's a small bay that's great for swimming in the summer. This path that is between the lagoon area and the exposed beach carries on and leads to a variety of trails to explore. If you're able to climb a bit to crest the rocks at the end of the initial easy and accessible pathway, you will find a well worn main path that takes you on a short hike around the rock that has many beautiful and interesting views of the surrounding ocean, lagoon area and the historical "Shack Island". Be prepared for protruding roots and rocks on the trails, once you reach the end of the initial walkway and crest the rocks to this path

Absolutely beautiful park, my favourite in Nanaimo. It’s a superb place to catch the sunrise in the morning and even whales if you’re lucky. The park is beautifully maintained and there’s a wide variety of terrain which keeps the trail interesting. Highly recommend you stop by even if you are just passing through Nanaimo.

Absolutely divine. About a 40 minute walk from the parking lot with some elevation changes. Pass through some old growth forest with trees hundreds of years old. The falls are well worth the trek!

Westwood Lake is great for all kinds of activities - swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding. I've enjoyed the 6 km hike around the lake. It's not challenging, good for long walks or jogging. Fantastic views for photography enthusiasts.
There are some special trails for mountain bikes.
Dogs are allowed, leashed only.

Lovely island. Can bike touring on a weekend. The Saturday market is very homely. The mix of farms, beaches, food stands and wineries is very refreshing.

One of the most gorgeous hikes just outside of Nanaimo. Be sure to wear waterproof footwear in the winter because the trails are usually wet. You'll definitely fall in love with this hike if you love river side walls that lead to the coast!

Beautiful during the low tide or high tide. Its long long stairs is really great if you want a real deep exercise. A great outdoor gym. You will really sweat it out.
Gorgeous views. It has a great location for parking than Invermere beach. It has a long stretch of sandbar which is great particularly during the summer. Kids would really have fun playing in the sand. And building sandcastles.
If you walk farther to the right you will reach Invermere beach. Invermere beach is really great if you have dogs.
