The Cathedral of Ratzeburg, one of the oldest brick churches of Northern Germany, is a basilica with three naves. Its arches are supported by pillars and it is built in the form of a cross with a choir quadrangle and a halfround apse. The cathedral was founded in 1154, when Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony, and Hartwich I, Archbishop of Hamburg, refounded the episcopal seat of Ratzeburg, and Evermodus became its first bishop. The cathedral was restored, and additions were made to it in the 15th century. The Cloister, on the north side of the Cathedral, was begun shortly after the completion of the Cathedral (ca. 1220). The cloistered courtyard is open for the public. The cathedral's foundation stone was laid on August 11, 1154, under the patronage of Heinrich the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria. It is one of the oldest church buildings in Schleswig-Holstein and is recognized as part of the group known as the "Lion Domes" due to its historical connections to Heinrich the Lion. The Ratzeburger Dom showcases a distinctive late Romanesque style, characterized by its robust brick construction. The building was completed around 1220 and features a cruciform layout, which was complemented by the addition of a cloister in the 13th century.
