Saint Catherine's observation deck is located at the bottom of the Bairro Alto district. This is a very popular vantage point offering an excellent view of the river bank. It is also an ideal place to watch the sunset. On the terrace there is a sculpture of the monster Adamastor, who according to legend blocked the way and sent storms to Portuguese sailors sailing to India. The monster symbolizes the Cape of Tribulation, whose current name is the Cape of Good Hope.
