great castle dating back to 1300, it has 189 rooms and resembles a french chateau. home of the duke's of Sutherland. the castle was used as a naval hospital during the first world war. it has large gardens, museum. falconry and cafe. open from 1 April until 31 October. falconry displays are usually 11.30 and 14.30.

Smoo Cave is a natural sea cave to the East of Durness village which is in Sutherland in the North West Highlands of Scotland. It impressive site that we would recommend to anybody visiting this beautiful and wild corner of Scotland.

Whaligoe Haven is one of the most remarkable harbours to be found in Scotland – surrounded on three sides by 250 feet cliffs, and is reached by the Whaligoe Steps which zig-zag down the cliffside. The natural harbour at the foot of the steps has been a long standing landing point for herring, salmon, whitefish and shellfish.

the river helmsdale is a famous salmon river, right next to our cottage. the river has a good run of salmon throughout the year. the season starts on the 11th of January until 30th September, the first two weeks of the season is free to fish on the river system, Anglers are required only to sign in, providing names and addresses, at Glencoast, the tackle and retail shop in the High St. , the rest of the season daily or weekly fishing permits can be obtained from glencoast for the town water beat.
