Unfortunately much of this amazing public art installation has been destroyed by some selfish and resentful members of the public. Created by Freyja Bardell and Brian Howe in 2017, the “Faces of Elysian Valley” are/were 3-D scanned faces of local residents cut into granite sourced from an area near Yosemite and placed in the center of the recently completed Confluence Plaza traffic circle. The “Faces” created an optical illusion that made them appear to turn with drivers as they slowly made their way around the “roundabout” intersection at Figueroa, Riverside and San Fernando. It really was a beautiful contribution of truly dynamic public art. I miss it greatly, and I hope that it gets reinstalled sometime in the future.
