The hike from Voss to Gråsidetoppen, via Rosehytta, is a very popular day trip.
You can start the hike from the town centre, but we recommend you to drive to the starting point at Gjelle. Drive past Gjernes on Fv 311 and take left where it is signed to Rio. Continue up the winding road and pass the first couple of farms, you will soon see a gravel road going up to your right (signposted to Roset). Follow the gravel road for about 500 metres (toll road) until you see a cabin and places to park your car next to the road.
To reach Gråsidetoppen (1307 m) follow the Tourist Association trail up the forest to the left of the road, signposted to "Roset" and "Torfinnsheim". When you reach Roset, continue on the trail towards Torfinnsheim. Further up on the mountain it will be signposted to Gråsidetoppen.
When you have reached the summit you can return following the same route or continue on over the summit and onto the T-marked trail towards Torfinnsheim and Hodnaberg. If you choose the last option, make sure you have sorted out transportation from Hodnaberg back to Voss before heading out.
Fauna:
There are a lot of deer in the forest below Gråsida and reindeer can be found in the mountains. You may also see hares in the area. The most common predators are foxes, European pine martens and stoats. You may also occasionally see a lynx.
Birds: You can often spot Western Capercaillie, Black Grouse, Red Grouse and Rock Ptarmigan. The most common of the carnivorous birds are the Common Kestrel, Eurasian Sparrowhawk and Northern Goshawk. In the years where the rodents breed prolifically you may also see a Rough-legged Buzzard.
Fish: The lakes in the area are stocked with trout.
Geology: Granite and gneiss are the most common types of rock in the area.
Distance: About 12 km and 5 hours return journey.
Climb: 900 m.
Season: June - October

Map reference: Voss 1:50 000 (Statens kartverk), Voss 1:25 000 (Ugland IT)
Comments: The gravel road at Gjelle is a toll road, NOK 30 in cash to continue across the gate. T-marked trail. The T-marked trails at Gråsida are quite long and run through high mountain terrain. Hikers must therefore be equipped for poor weather conditions. A map of the area and a compass are essential. If you want to hunt for small game or fish, you need to purchase a license. You can buy this at Voss Tourist information in Voss town centre.

About Finnbunuten
Follow the marked trail to Finnbunuten from Myrkdalen Mountain Resort in Myrkdalen, via Helgatun and Vetlebotn. When you reach the mountain farm Vetlebotn, continue along "Kari Traa ski lift" (the ski lift furtherst east).
This is a family-friendly hike with a trail that is easy to negotiate. However, it is relatively long with the journey to the summit from Voss Fjellandsby/Helgatun measuring 900 meters, and 650 meters from Vetlebotn. The hike can be reduced somewhat by driving along the toll-road to Vetlebotn (700 meters above sea level) and starting the walk from there.
On a clear day you can enjoy magnificent views of glaciers such as Hardangerjøkulen, Jostedalsbreen and Folgefonna. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of some reindeer, as the grazing ground in the area surrounding Finnbunuten is vital for the wild reindeer during the summer and autumn months.

From Voss Folk Museum: The first part from the museum takes you up a relatively steep foothpath to the Hanguren restaurant, 660 masl., marked with a T. Continue on the marked path hrough Hanguren on the left-hand side of Valbergstjørni until you eventually meet the road from Bavallen. After following this road for a short distance you will be given the choice of continuing along the road or taking the T-route to the trail crossing at Vådalseggi.
From Bavallen: The hike starts from the parking area at Bavallen. Follow the road until you see the T-route, marked Nyestølen, then continue along this until you come to the trail crossing at Vådalseggi.
The trails from Hanguren and Bavallen meet at Vådalseggi. Follow the road from here to Kvilehytta and then take the T-route to the summit of Lønahorgi.
Comments: Tourist Association route (T) from Bavallen to Hanguren.
The trail is marked during the summer months. However, extensive local knowledge of the area is necessary when travelling in the winter season. The trail to Lønahorgi is long and covers high mountainous terrain where the weather can change suddenly. You must therefore take precautions and carry a map and compass with you at all times.
