The Vleeshuis is a five hundred year old guild hall in the Gothic style. Vleehuis used to house the Butcher’s guild, and acted as a central meat market. Unusually, the current museum has nothing to do with the building’s history, instead being a collection of musical instruments. Detailing the story of minstrels, and choirs up to more modern concerts and dance, it pays for the entrance fee in sheer novelty alone, with the Aida trumpets and antique instruments being of particular note.

The museum is located to the left of the terminal entrance at the airport. it is quite a small museum with just two members of staff when I visited. The maiden house fits in with the other 16th/17th century museums in Antwerp. However, while the other museums mostly focus on paintings or printed books, here the history of the maiden house itself takes center stage. The building is not as nicely decorated as the other museums, since the orphans were probably raised in modest circumstances. Nevertheless, the chapel is quite nice to see, with some huge paintings that give an impression of what life here may have been like. To me another highlight are the 16th century and other old documents. The inner court is also quite nice. I think they should be able to elaborate more on the history of the building...

Hôtel Tassel is widely considered the world’s first Art Nouveau building. Built by architect Victor Horta in 1893, the UNESCO World Heritage house (which, contrary to the name, isn’t a hotel) was designed as a home for Belgian scientist and professor Emile Tassel. The building features a trendsetting design that abandoned the traditions of the time for modern materials like iron and glass. A distinctive stone exterior with large curved bay windows encases a stunning interior, the centrepiece of which is a grand staircase that spirals up through the tall townhouse. While visitors can’t freely venture inside, it’s worth passing by to see the building’s striking exterior.

The imposing, square 26 metre-tall tower was built around the year 1100, while the nave was rebuilt in 1712. The coats of arms representing the salmon of Salm above the doorway were hammered and made almost indecipherable by the French revolutionaries at the and of the 18th century. The external gallery is supported by three beams adorned with grimacing faces. From the top of this gallery, relics brought back from the Crusades were presented to pilgrims. Inside, the Baroque oak furniture is the work of the sculptor Jean-Georges Scholtus of Bastogne.

The National Cycling Museum ! A must for any cycling freak who comes to Belgium. It's not very big, but really worth a visit. On the ground floor they have a permanent collection about the history of cycling and bicycles (which is also quite interesting for the non-freaks) and upstairs there's always a changing collection (e.g. the history of the world championships cyclo-cross, history of 20 years the team Flandria,...). There's a very big chance also you'll meet Freddy Maertens, two times world champion, because he works there.

The Belfry of Bruges is a medieval bell tower that sits in Market Square, and it is listed as one of the top things to do in Bruges. It’s 366 steps to reach the top and once you do you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city. The funny part is trying to take a symmetrical photo of the tower once you’re back on solid ground because the tower is actually tilted a whole meter to the east.

Ghent is a little rebel. People from Ghent are called rope (or: noose) bearers as they seriously rebelled against the regime of the Roman Emperor and Spanish King Charles (Karel) V back in 1539. Charles won and humiliated the people of Ghent by having them parade around town with white undershirts and ropes around their neck. If you stroll the area around Prinsenhof you will find the famous statue remembering this humiliation. There are even restaurants and bars named after this and I am sure you will find more (hidden) references!

Leave the fuss of shoppers and tourists in the city center and step away from the traffic of Brussels’ small ring to a more peaceful part of town. The Canal area is poised to become the new up-and-coming, trendy neighborhood in the years to come. But for now it makes for a relaxed, lazy walk along the Senne. Colored pinwheels and urban art discontinuously dot the canal. The northern side has a distinct post-industrial attire, but gets greener closer to Tour & Taxis. The route gets busy in some parts, but is worth it for the pockets of peace you’ll encounter along this still relatively unassuming part of Brussels, for as long as it lasts.

Gravensteen is one of the strongest moated fortresses in Western Europe, surrounded by the River Lieve. It was built between 1180 and 1200 on the orders of Philip of Alsace, the former count of Flanders, on the foundation of an earlier 9th-century structure and was created in the style of Syrian crusader castles. Today, it remains a unique example of the European medieval art of fortification.

It was built between 1180 and 1200 on the orders of Philip of Alsace, the former count of Flanders, on the foundation of an earlier 9th-century structure and was created in the style of Syrian crusader castles. Today, it remains a unique example of the European medieval art of fortification.

On the west side of Sint-Baafsplein stands the 91-meter-high belfry, symbol of the city's independence, where the charters of the privileges of Ghent were kept. The tower was begun about 1300 and by 1338, it was mainly completed. The present-day spire was restored to its original 14th-century form at the beginning of this century and replaced the wooden bell tower of 1380. It is crowned by a gilded copper dragon, which was first installed in 1377. Today, it is a replica as are the four armed figures at the corners of the platform.

Immaculately restored in 1962, this former children's hospital - founded in 1363 - is one of Belgium's last remaining Godshuizen. These houses were founded by well-off families for the needy. In a picturesque courtyard are 18 typical Flemish cottages, all interconnected and now housing the extremely comprehensive Museum voor Volkskunde, which with its notable collection of equipment, documents, and everyday objects provides a vivid picture of Flemish folk life around 1900. Of particular interest are the restored workshops and living rooms, a dining room, a barber's shop, a cobbler's workshop, an apothecary's shop, a confectioner's bakery, and a candlestick maker's workshop.

In the east part of the city, across the Slachthuisbrug over the Leie Canal, are the ruins of Sint-Baafsabdij, an abbey founded in 630 by St. Amandus and rebuilt after being destroyed by the Normans in the 10th century. A gallery of the late Gothic cloisters, the octagonal lavatorium, and parts of the chapter house and the refectory still remain from the original abbey. This rustic restaurant lies hidden away down a quiet cobbled lane in Uccle commune, south of the city centre. Too hidden, it turns out, for our taxi driver, who ends up hopelessly lost. Most of the people who eat here are locals who come on foot, so the place is still something of a secret. You can dine in the nostalgic bistro interior or outside on the terrace when the weather allows. The €30 menu is fantastic value for Brussels, although you might have to factor in an astronomical taxi fare.

Tucked away down a side street near the flea market, this rambling restaurant is decorated with a bewildering collection of old biscuit tins and coffee grinders. A bit cluttered, perhaps, but the decor fits in well with the grungy antique shops in the neighbourhood. The kitchen produces inventive dishes cooked in Belgian beers, such as scallops simmered in Watou’s Wit from Brouwerij Van Eecke. The long beer list includes hard-to-find local brews: Jambe-de-Bois from Brasserie de la Senne and the stubbornly sour Cantillon for any customers up for a taste challenge.

Most Brussels restaurants are quiet places compared to London or New York. Anything more than a whisper is considered vulgar. But diners at Toucan can raise the roof beams on a busy Friday night, when the kitchen staff put together huge platters of fresh seafood, including sublime oysters from the Atlantic coast and little grey shrimps scooped from the North Sea. The white walls and plain wood furniture add to the maritime mood.

Authentic local Belgian wine tasting ! A must ! Belgium’s southernmost town Torgny is located in Gaume and thus enjoys a much warmer climate than the country’s northern reaches. The picturesque village is widely considered one of the most beautiful towns in Wallonia, and its location on the banks of the charming Chiers River, as well as its winding streets and pretty houses topped with Roman tiles make it a romantic destination.

In 1937, the architect F Van Ruyskensvelde converted the ground floor into an Art Deco-style cocktail bar with an ocean-liner-style mezzanine and chrome panelling. In 1953, the bar was taken over by the pianist Stan Brenders who made "L'Archiduc" a famous venue for Belgian jazz. Today, the original décor and Brenders' piano lend a period air to the cocktails and "jazz after shopping" concerts.

La Porteuse d'Eau ! A beautiful café on two floors with stained glass windows and a spiral staircase. It occupies an Art Nouveau building designed by Ernest Blérot, whose signature is carved on a stone to the right of the entrance. The same architect designed all the houses running along the north side of nearby Rue Vanderschrick, as well as several in Avenue Jean Volders. But the interior of La Porteuse d’Eau, although it looks Art Nouveau, is a modern replica.
