This place is wonderful. A small honesty shop selling ice-cream (Heavenly Honeycomb describes itself!), milk, cheese, fresh apple juice, jams and eggs. There are a number of picnic tables you a can sit to enjoy your purchases and take in the stunning Weaver Hills. (Open 08:00-22:00hrs)
Recently they opened ‘The Hatch’ where from you can buy coffee, cakes, and their mouth watering ‘fruit spinner’, Wednesday - Sunday.
Well worth a visit & is 5 minutes by car from the Den.

This is our most favourite local ‘special occasion’ restaurant! Fabulous tasting menu which caters for all dietary needs. The service is brilliant, staff are knowledgeable about the food and wine, and the chef innovative! Highly recommend this place but needs to be booked 3 months in advance and is about a 20 minute drive from the Den.

Beautiful place which you can walk to or cycle to from the Den. It has a fabulous cafe “The Ramblers Retreat” where you can refuel too! There plenty of stunning walks through the Churnet Valley or some good bouldering if you’re into that!

The Tissington Trail is a disused railway line which runs between Ashbourne & Parsley Hay, about 13 miles away. You can walk or cycle and is accessible for buggy’s & wheelchairs. You can hire bikes (including kids bikes, pull alongs & trailers) at the start. There’s plenty of places to buy a snack along the way, and at the 5 mile point there’s the beautiful estate village of Tissington, where you can refuel at ‘Herberts Fine English Tearooms!’

Great place for families. This Severn Trent owned reservoir has a visitor centre with a number of cafes, a restaurant and small retail outlets. You can walk or cycle around the reservoir which is an 8 mile loop or take one of the shorter routes. There’s a great playground for kids and a number or places to picnic. If you’re feeling adventurous there’s also a watersports centre where you can learn to canoe/kayak/sail/windsurf (or just hire them if you already have the skills!)

Market Towns
Ashbourne is a great market town in the Derbyshire Dales (along with Bakewell & Buxton). It has a good number of independent gift shops, galleries, antique shops and ladies (mainly) clothes shops. It has an awesome kids shoe shop with very patient staff! It also has a number of well known chains, including Fat Face, Joules, M&Co & Boots. There are numerous cafes - our favourites are ‘The Little Shed’, ‘Jack Rabbits’ & ‘The Flower Cafe’ - which is good if you’re gluten free!
If you want a break from cooking but don’t want a restaurant meal, The Market Place Fish & Chips is the best chippy in miles!
Ashbourne also has some lovely architecture and the stunning St Oswaldo Church.

Uttoxeter is a market town, but not an exciting one in our books (unless you include it’s two ace cafes, Bear & HOHM)! It does however have all the things you need… A huge Tesco’s (cheapest petrol around), Waitrose, Aldi & Asda. It also has Cinebowl, an Ice-Rink & Leisure Centre, so is a good wet day go-too…
