City/town information
“The most indifferent observer will not fail to notice Dayton. The wide streets, kept in excellent order, the noble blocks of stores, filled with choice, and of course, cheap goods, and more than all, the exceeding beauty and neatness of the dwellings, you at once mark with a 'white stone,' in a small bend of the Great Miami River, with canals on the east and south, it may be fairly said that Dayton is the gem of all our interior towns; it possesses wealth, refinement, enterprise and a beautiful country.”
- A Cincinnati Chronicle reporter known as "T", Aug 18, 1845.
Dayton may have been nicknamed "The Gem City", after the publication of that Cincinnati Chronicle article.
Dayton is the birthplace of many..... I mean, many inventions. It's the city of the Wright Brothers, credited with creating and flying the first motor-operated aircraft. It's also the city of John Patterson, the inventor of the cash register and founder of NCR. The city of Charles Kettering, who invented the electrical starter and founded DELCO. And many more inventors, outstanding engineers and business leaders who marked the 20th century.
Visit the Carillon Historical Park for an exciting journey in the history of Dayton.
