We love it here, steeped in history, an interesting visit.
Located just a 15-minute drive away from Stonehenge is another historic site with a remarkable history.
Old Sarum was once a thriving town and the original site of Salisbury’s cathedral. Then 800 years ago everything changed.
Seeking liberty for its worshipping community, the church defied the state and moved away from the castle on the hillfort. The cathedral was rebuilt on the plain, just two miles away, where it still stands today. Some time later, a rather famous spire was added!
Old Sarum is cared for by English Heritage and visitors can walk in the footprint of the old cathedral, climb through the castle ruins and explore the Iron Age ramparts all while taking in the fantastic views of Salisbury and its famous cathedral.
Did you know you can visit both Stonehenge and Old Sarum as many times as you’d like for free with an English Heritage membership? There's also a bus service that operates between the two sites, making it easy to visit both places in one day.
