4 Via del PoliteamaA decades-old Trastevere institution, bar San Calisto - as distinct from most venues in Rome - has never been renovated and sticks to its basic décor and cheap prices. It's open from early morning to late at night, and attracts people of any age and social standing - artists and intellectuals, alcoholics and idlers, housewives and American students.
Here you can have the best chocolate served in different ways: as ice-cream in summer (for only 1 euro!) or hot with fresh whipped cream in winter. After sunset it may be hard to find a table, but if you are in the mood, mingle with the young people standing outside and finish the evening enjoying a Sambuca con la mosca (with two coffee beans)

One of my favorite places to go and eat a simple but tasty meal is the trattoria "da Augusto", a very popular trattoria, where locals and tourists mingle at lunch and dinner. Now it's run by Sandro, Augusto's son, but it never followed the latest fashion and still maintains the same furniture and style of the beginnings.
It is loved by young people and by old Trastevere families too. Some of them meet there every day, ask for their quartino (a small measure) of red or white wine and start chatting about politics, soccer or relatives. As in many trattorie in this neighborhood, tables are very close to each other, and it's not the best place if you looking for a quiet, intimovero ed economico

27/G Piazza di S. EgidioBest known by Romans as the Obitorio (Morgue) because of its long marble tables and fluorescent lights, this pizzeria makes for a gastronomic and cultural experience.
Reservations are not accepted, and each night after 7.30/8.00 PM the two rooms and the tables outside are full, so get there early or you'll have to wait for a table. Yet the line moves fast, and once you are seated don't expect to have any privacy, as there is no space between tables, and you'll find yourself elbow rubbing with the Italian mega families, and this is part of the fun. Actually, this is a rather noisy place, where tourists are outnumbered by Romans, and you have to talk loudly if you want to be heard!

The Forno La Renella is open early in the morning till late at night. Its loyal clientele is so vast that you have to take a numbered ticket and wait your turn. Behind the counter, the crew is always nice and I've seen them give bread to poor people at the door for free. To be honest, when I go there for bread I can't resist buying a slice of pizza too. It's the thick and soft kind, topped with colorful fresh ingredients: generous pieces of mozzarella, tomatoes and seasonal vegetables. They also sell home-made biscuits and cakes at a very reasonable price.
A sign on the wall tells customers that they don't use animal fats in their products, so vegans too can safely enjoy many of their special

The supplì is a popular Roman snack consisting in a ball of rice with tomato sauce and a heart of mozzarella, coated in breadcrumbs and then deep-fried. Must be savored very hot, with the mozzarella almost melted inside.
The best ones in Trastevere are to be found in "Ai Supplì", otherwise known as "Venanzio" by the name of the owner. The second generation of the Venanzio family is today behind the counter, a nice team always joking with the clientele and greetings regulars by name.At lunchtime, locals and people working in the area flock to this small spot craving a generous serving of pasta prepared by the talented chef. Here you have steaming hot bucatini all'amatriciana

hose who are in search of an authentic bakery in central Rome should try the bakery and patisserie Le Levain, hidden up an unmarked street close to piazza San Cosimato. It's the realm of the chef Giuseppe Solfrizzi who studied at the Ècole Nationale Superiéure de Pâtisserie in Lyon and specialized with the pâtissier-chocolatier Jean-Philippe Darcis in Belgium. The combination of this French expertise, the sourcing of top-quality ingredients and the Southern Italy culinary tradition has resulted in remarkable a variety of breads, cakes and pastries.

Piazza di SpagnaWith its ensign of handmade, artisanal ceramic tiles, this friendly second-hand bookshop is situated on the quieter side of Trastevere.
It opened in 1975 and is now run by Lavinia and Elaine. Today, it is the only bookshop in Rome selling second-hand English books. You can find every kind of book here, from paperback fiction to history, science or touristic guides. Smaller sections provide books in French, Italian or Spanish.
On their website you can find the more expensive and rare books, along with an interesting section of art books, but the shop worths a visit, because prices here are really competitive: thrillers and novels cost just 1 or 2 Euros!
