Julian has a rich history of gold mining. Julian began as a California mining camp when A.E. (Fred) Coleman discovered placer gold at Coleman Creek in 1869. The entire township of Julian is a Designated Historical District. Its image as an early California frontier town with pioneer store fronts, historic sites and guided tours of Eagle and High Peak Mines accounts for much of its modern appeal. The old-fashioned gold mine offers terrific and informative California tours that guide adventures through the world of a 1870s mining operation. Learn as they help preserve our state’s rich history. The tours last one hour, and are conducted by a courteous professional.
