Balanced Rock on Fernalds Neck is a Glacial erratic. Deposited by glaciers 20,000 years ago. When it was all fields around it 200 years ago it gained the nickname of the Haystack.

Great side trip and boat ride. Best if walk on passenger and view the bay and mountains from the viewing deck. Museum at Island terminal and a snack shack. Last boat leaves at 4:30 back to Mainland
You can go out by car but be very careful about departure times as you can become stranded on the Island.
