Classic British 'boozer' (pub). Popular, old-fashioned, with live music most nights, with street food stalls outside some nights. Lots of live music most nights and comedy shows in the theatre upstairs.

If you want a taste of how Walthamstow used to be, before middle class gentrification began, take a walk up the stairs to The Victoria, which has barely changed in decades. The karaoke nights on Fridays are always entertaining. They also host some bands and drag shows.

Basic place, but great gin.

Very tasty sour dough pizzas and reasonably priced drinks with a minimalist hipster vibe, tucked down a cobbled alleyway, around the corner from "Mirth" - the cinema turned bar. Can get busy at peak times, so worth booking ahead if you want your own table. There are shared tables too.

On Sundays there is a small farmers' market at the top of the high street, near the library, selling bread, cheese, meat, fish and some street food. The main market runs Tuesday-Saturday - see other entry.

Voted one of the top 50 Vegetarian restaurants in Britain and for good reason. But it's actually an all-day cafe that opens into the evenings Thursday to Saturday. There's a garden out the back and an extra indoor eating area.

This new Indian eaterie delivers superb, tasty food at very reasonable prices (so sometimes you'll need to book). It's all vegan but trust me, meat eaters will be very surprised by their fake chicken.

Sightseeing
Tucked away, but close to Walthamstow Central is "The Village". Best approached along St Marys Rd and then continue up Church Path, you come out in what appears to be a different place and time. Wander past the churchyard, an ancient timber-framed house and down Orford Rd to the pubs, restaurants and cute shops. And don't miss the less glamorous industrial estate where there's a brewery, a gin palace and a mass of neon (see elsewhere on this list).
