Miles of paved and unpaved trails through this floodplain riparian forest make for great exploring on foot or bike. While there, keep an eye out for the massive cottonwood trees scattered along the rivers edge.

My favorite bike path covers 21 miles between the towns of Banks and Vernonia. It runs through idyllic farmland and the lush forests of Stub Stewart State Park. The gentle slope and paved path is an easy ride except for one steep hill where the train trestle burned down long ago. A regular rider can do the 42 mile round trip in a few hours, but why not stop in Vernonia for lunch and a drink halfway through?
