The Bayfield Peninsula and the Apostle Islands offers hundreds of miles of hiking trails with scenic overlooks of Lake Superior and sandstone formations.
Enjoy boreal forest habitats, sandstone cliffs, seasonal waterfalls, and Lake Superior’s rocky shoreline. The trailhead is located on Houghton Falls Road off of Highway 13 about 9 miles south of Bayfield. the Trail is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Houghton Falls RoadEnjoy boreal forest habitats, sandstone cliffs, seasonal waterfalls, and Lake Superior’s rocky shoreline. The trailhead is located on Houghton Falls Road off of Highway 13 about 9 miles south of Bayfield. the Trail is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
Including both ravine and upland areas, the forests consist of mixed hardwood and conifer trees, including big cedars, hemlocks and pines. It’s located in the heart of the city of Bayfield, just steps from downtown. Follow 4th Street uphill to the Bayfield School, Turn left on Sweeny and park at the baseball field. The trail begins behind the outfield fence. The trail can also be accessed off of Meyers-Olson Road.
