A few structures of the fourteenth century remain, while the outer defences fronting the town date from the early eighteenth century.
The Castle's long, turbulent history is associated with great figures from Scotland’s past such as William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots.
There is a lot to see: the Royal Chambers, Great Hall, Old Kitchens, the Tapestry Studio..... There is a good café.
