A nice activity on a sunny day/evening is to walk from Monument down to the Quayside via Grey Street (voted best street in the UK a couple of years ago), Dean Street and The Side, then along the river. There a bars almost everywhere on this route if you get thirsty. You can also easily detour to see the castle and St Nicholas' Cathedral.

Its a huge second hand book shop in an old railway station with cosy fires and comfy reading chairs, a cafe. They don't seem to mind if you just go and read there for the day either!
Get the train, and then a bus from the station (quicker), or a direct bus from Haymarket (cheaper).
