In medieval times Lindos was a most important settlement on the island, second only to the city of Rhodes. It was then that the ancient Citadel (Acropolis) was fortified into a castle. Tradition has it that St. Paul the Apostle landed here when he came to the island of Rhodes, which explains why the tiny cove on the other side of the settlement was named "Aghios Pavlos" (St.-Paul's cove) .

The beach at Anthony Quinn bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes. The waters owe their deep emerald colour to the lush green vegetation which surrounds the beach. Because of it's small size, the beach gets fairly crowded during July and August. The finest spot is the rock right in the centre of the beach, with room for just a few sun beds. At the top of the rocks you will find a canteen. The crystal clear water and gorgeous underwater scenery also makes Anthony Quinn bay one of the best areas in Rhodes for snorkeling.

Lindos offers two different beaches actually, sharing the same bay. There are sunbeds and umbrellas everywhere, and the beaches are well occupied, but not necessarily crowded.

Elli beach in Rhodes Town, being one of the most popular Greek beaches among photographers, still retains something of its cosmopolitan aspect from the 70's, and is one of the most visited beaches on the island.

If you would like to swim, the most promising place is at the St. Pauls bay, at the back of the Acropolis. From there you can see the castle and temple from a whole different angle
