Sightseeing

The Kruger National Park Going on safari is a 'must do' for all Travellers.... The Kruger National Park is a special place. For first timers, I would suggest a guided Safari. Morning safari drives are special as you experience the African bush waking up and you hear the bush rustle as the animals start ambling through making their way to the watering holes. Sunset safaris are also just as exciting. The call of an African Fish Eagle, (the hope) and anticipation of seeing lions on the hunt for dinner, or herds of elephants going to cool down in the dams after the heat of the day as the sun sets. And as you start making your way to exit the Kruger, you hear the night calls of the jackals and hyenas and it reaffirms, there is no where like Africa. It is hard to decide which one to do... So if time allows - go on both a morning safari and an afternoon safari. For those who are regular visitors to the Kruger, then a self drive is a great option. Go at your own pace, pack a picnic basket, grab your Kruger map book and head off into the Kruger with your day mapped out. There are some stunning picnic sites to stop at to stretch your legs, fire up you skottel for those egg and bacon rolls, or take out your picnic basket and enjoy the views whilst taking in the surrounds. Many of these picnic sites offer hot water for teas and coffees, you can hire a skottel for a minimal cost and make use of the picnic tables and chairs. One of our favourite sites is Nkhulu, overlooking the Sabie River (between Skukuza and Lower Sabie). If you have a 4x4 and looking for something more remote, try out Nhlanguleni Picinic spot on the s36 - amazing in winter time.... Remote (gravel roads), and due to limited winter rains, that watering hole always draws in animals. Facilities are limited at this site, but they do have skottels, hot water, iced water and (very) rustic toilets. The main link roads in the Kruger are tarred, whilst there are plenty of sand and gravel roads and shorter loops to explore. All visitors to the Kruger must produce their I.D. or Passport and pay an entrance fee. The closest entrance from the Kruger Park Lodge is the Phabeni Gate - only 12 kms away. Take care and respect the animal's space, they always have right of way.

Well worth a visit, to walk with an African Elephant, Their steps are so slightly, as you walk in front of them, with their trunk resting in your palm. Gentle giants for sure.

City/town information

Hazyview is a small Kruger tourist town, located 12kms from the Phabeni Gate. The Kruger Park Lodge is situated in Hazyview. The town has a well stocked Checkers Supermarket for all your foodie supplies. And for days when you are not up for cooking. there is a Pizzeria, Steakhouse and a Nandos Takeway and the usual Macdonalds. Perrys Bridge is a small outdoor centre with a few tourist shops, a baker and coffee bar - worth popping into for a stroll through to feel the vibe of Hazyview.

Safety

Staying within the Kruger Park Lodge, there is good security - 24 hours, but nonetheless, always wise to not leave valuables lying around and avoid temptation (there are general workers onsite, suppliers, delivery vehicles and other guests), so best just to take care of your items. The chalets do have safes for guests to use to place their valuables in when they are out and about. In your vehicle - in general throughout South Africa - don't leave items visible in your car 'Smash and grabs' do occur at traffic lights or in parked vehicles.
