Sightseeing
Lahaina is a very historical, fun place known for oceanside restaurants, live music, art galleries, surfing, beach time, harbor trips including sunset dinner cruises. We especially love the whale watch small boat trips early morning (5-6a) during March! A baby (with Mama close) whale were so close from the 32' boat! The huge banyan tree shades an entire (old) block where the prison used to be. They relocated the prison about a 2 blocks off Front Street on Prison Street and its free to visit. Other historical spots include the Baldwin Museum and the Chinese Museum. I have listened to the most beautiful harp player during the Chinese Kite Celebration. It was also free. Lahaina has a downtown library and several grassy parks.

It’s worth it to me. It’s a natural wonder and is cool to see on a normal day but even cooler when we have high surf warnings because the waves are much bigger for a higher more powerful spray. It’s a little bit of a hike to get down to the blowhole. At first it doesn’t seem like it’s that long but once you get going it’s a lot of rocks that you have to walk around being careful while placing your next step so as to not slide, roll an ankle or fall. If it’s misty or wet it’s more treacherous. I’ve seen folks resting, overheated because they had to climb and were hot without freshwater. Beautiful spot well visited but wear proper foot gear and be careful.

Mostly flat wide beachwalk where you may walk 3-12 miles depending on whether you want to walk down and back or Lahaina to Honokawai and back. Pictures include the Kaanapali and Kapalua walkways.

If you would like pictures of large groups of turtles and possibly large, giant turtles on the beach, go to this spot about 2 miles past Paia on the Hana Hwy. around sunset 5-6:30p. It and the turtles are truly amazing! The turtles come up on the beaches at night to sleep. They use the waves to give them a ride and push them up on shore. Some large, most small to medium-sized Honu. Please do not touch the turtles and maintain a distance of 7’ from turtles! They are protected in Hawaii.

It's free, but donations are welcome to the farm. We stop and buy fresh fruit, macadamia nut king Kamehameha bar or a coconut. The walking paths are flat and wide through clumps of bamboo and other beautiful foliage. Two smaller falls within 1/8-1/4 mile are close to the entrance. Keep walking back ~1/2 mile and then you cross a small stream (<4" deep and 8' wide), walk along a 12' brick wall and cross another smaller stream and you will be at a larger falls with a nice-sized natural pool. It attracts a lot of swimmers, but it seems to be flushed by the mountain runoff so it should be okay to swim in, I guess. My husband did it and said it was refreshing. If you choose to hike beyond the large pool, traditional hiking begins and we recommend a guide or gps, compass and day pack with lots of water and bug repellent to avoid getting lost in the woods or stranded somewhere. It gets muddy so you will usually come back muddy. We walked back to two additional falls upstream of the large pool but saw two groups with guides during our hike. We had to make our own trail in places, several paths. Streams above are much deeper and more powerful, difficult to cross in places.
