It is located on the Shawangunk Ridge, a section of the Appalachian Mountains. The Preserve maintains over 70 miles of carriage roads and 40 miles of trails for hiking, cycling, trail running, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and horseback riding. We go here almost every weekend with the dog and are still finding incredible areas we’ve never seen. It’s also a great place to cross-country ski in the winter.

a beautifully-maintained conservancy with hiking trails to the Ellenville Fault Ice Caves, a series of winding crevices and tunnels caused by re-freezing snow melts. It is a designated National Landmark and is well worth the visit. Pick wild blueberries along the trail in the summertime. The parking lot fills up, so it’s best to go early in the morning. And if you make the trip out there (about 30 minutes), definitely make a stop at the Mountain Brau Haus for a German lunch.

Swimming
There are a number of places to swim. We love to swim in the Rondout creek. There’s a huge waterfall right in the middle of High Falls, and lots of people swim right beneath it. Further down the creek it feeds into something called the Peekamoose Blue Hole which is a great swimming spot. You can also swim in Lake Minnewaska, which is about 25 minutes away, the Awosting Falls in the same park, or a number of local creeks that stay ice cold all year round like this one https://www.alltrails.com/trail/ us/new-york/vernooy-falls-trail
