Tacoma is privileged to have miles of public waterfront access. Ruston Way runs along the Puget Sound and Commencement Bay from just past downtown to Point Defiance. There’s numerous seafood restaurants, parks, miles of paved sidewalks, a hotel and the massive, $1.6 billion Point Ruston development. It’s still under construction, but they already have several condo & apartment buildings, a movie theater, dining and retail.

About 3 miles away from our house, at 5400 N. Pearl, is 760-acre Point Defiance Park. The crown jewel of Tacoma, it contains a nationally recognized zoo & aquarium, ferry terminal (the ferry sails to Tahlequah on Vashon Island), beach access, Fort Nisqually living history museum, rose garden, rhododendron garden, miles of trails and hundreds of acres of old growth forest. Deep in the forest is one of the tallest remaining Douglas Fir trees, at over 210 feet tall. The park is also served by the #10 bus route. If you visit just one park in T-Town, it’s gotta be the Point.
