The best beach we’ve found in Kona is Kikaua Point Park located north of the airport. This public beach is served by a private parking area with only 31 spots. The beach has bathrooms and showers, but no services so bring plenty of sunscreen, a cooler and your lunch.
Since there are only 31 spots, the beach fills up quickly and security restricts passes, so you can’t just park on the lava. To guarantee a spot we suggest you arrive by 8:30 AM. It is a great place to spend an entire day relaxing.
To access it you need to check in at the security station located at:

The Captain Cook Monument is located at the site where Captain Cook was killed by Hawaiian natives on February 14, 1779. It is in the Kealakekua Bay Marine Life Conservation District where the water is generally crystal clear and you can often find pods of spinner dolphins at play.
Accessing the monument should only be attempted by guests in excellent physical condition. It is a 1 mile hike from the road ( down hill ) through nearly 1,000 ft of altitude. The return trip can be brutal, so bring plenty of water if you decide to go.
Parking for the site is along Napoopoo Rd. Be careful parking here because traffic doesn’t stop. Cross the road and hike down the Captain Cook Monument trail.
